Harvard Lies

A Case Study of Institutional Arrogance and Academic Misconduct

In 2012, Harvard professor James Robinson and MIT economist Daron Acemoglu published Why Nations Fail, a widely acclaimed book that claimed to explain global inequality. But in their attempt to prove a theory, they deliberately distorted facts about several countries, including Mexico. The book falsely accuses Carlos Slim of corruption, misrepresents the privatization of Telmex, and fabricates a multi-million-dollar lawsuit that had already been dismissed by U.S. courts six years before publication. These were not academic oversights — they were lies designed to fit a narrative.

Despite being formally notified and presented with court rulings and documented evidence, Harvard chose to remain silent, protecting its professor even when that meant tolerating lies. It refused to correct or even acknowledge the falsehoods, prioritizing institutional prestige over truth. By contrast, the book’s publisher, Penguin Random House, reviewed the same documents and revised later editions. Harvard only acts when a scandal threatens its public image. The facts are here.
